Conference Call August 18, 2008

Tonights conference call was quite informative with several questions relating to practice. The "30 second rule" seems to be a big hit for those that are sometimes too busy to practice in the morning before work. Everyone is preparing for Clinic 3: Relaxation the Door to Meditation. Our November conference call date will be changed and all participants will be notified. I look forward to reading all of your posts.

missed conference call Aug. 18th

Yep,I missed it, too! I totally had the 21st in mind-next time for sure I'll be there. Looks like people are getting some wonderful teaching opportunities! I too have been fortunate enough to begin teaching! I have a class of supportive co-workers that are coming every Wednesday morning at 0600 before we begin our workday. Unfortunately, we are able to meet for only 30 minutes because I start work at 0630, but it has defintely helped get me into the teaching realm and they seem to be delighted with the whole process. I have not given a formal presentation yet given the length of time we have for classes at this point. I really wanted to get them into a "relaxation spot" and give them some immediate tools to be able to use for stress reduction. I knew I had hit the spot after the second class when we had done a full body relaxation with a very short focused breathing moment. They had the same look on their faces that I know I have after relaxation! It feels great to be able to guide people to this place for themselves! We will have our 5th class this Wednesday morning and I plan on moving into counted breathing. I need to start working on a presentation for my director so she can see what it is that we are all working on. She might like to add some form of meditation training to our surgical services pre-op teaching. We haven't worked out the details yet...that's my job to educate her on what I will be able to do for patients.(What WILL I be able to do for patients??!) These are "good scary" times. Doors are opening in Bellingham, too. (Yea!) Hope every one is well out there. So looking forward to October!

August Conference call- and new meditation adventures

So sorry I missed the conference call, oops I wrote down the wrong date. I was really looking forward to talking to all of you and share. I recently talked to the administrator at the women’s shelter where I want to teach and she was very excited to hear what I had to say. I’m still waiting to hear from the house manager.
In the mean time I am starting to put a presentation together one on paper on a one on power point for another project I’m working on as well. The hospital where I work is having a rejuvenating retreat for the staff and I talked to one of the coordinators and she is really excited about having me teach a 1 hour class. For now I want to volunteer my services, but she did offer to pay me. I just thought since I’m not certified I should look at this as an opportunity to get some experience.
Apparently the hospital puts on this retreat every year- I just became an employee and was ecstatic to hear about it. It sounds like the perfect place to get started. I think it’s wonderful they have this and surprising because it is a Catholic hospital and the hospital is very accepting of meditation. It’s a wonderful place to work and feel I am where I need to be since it’s close to home and I finally decided to apply there not knowing what great opportunities they have for their employees. They believe strongly in mental and spiritual health- it’s a St Joseph’s Health System. The other day in the middle of work I heard an overhead announcement that there would be meditation in the chapel. I was almost in shock but I thought it was great- I couldn’t make it though. Anyhow the reason why I mention these things is because there is more awareness about meditation and it’s health benefits in the hospital setting (at least this one), more so than I thought. Its interesting how all of these things are unraveling and creating opportunities for me to share my practice and eventually teach. The hospital has a committee that focuses on the mental health of the employees and I want to be a part of that group.
I hope you all are doing well. I have decided since the last conference call (July) that I would get up at 5:30 every morning when I work so I can practice my meditation and so far it’s worked out really well. I just needed to make that commitment. I feel great after I meditate so happy even on my way to a long 12 hour shift! I think it helps me have a good day!

Hi, I just read your blog from august. I was wondering if we could talk more about how you approach the Women’s shelter administrator. I know a women’s shelter director, personally but I almost don’t know what to say. I’d love to hear back from you.

August Conference Call

Yikes, I missed it too. So sorry. It's been an exciting month for me as I've been looking for more opportunites to teach. Recently I taught a family of 4, including 2 teenagers. We just sat in chairs in the back yard on a beautiful night in Pasadena. So nice to hear how much they felt they benefited from a first time guided meditation. Then last week, I went back to the Research Center for a second teaching and guided practice. We just reviewed a bit from the first class, talked a bit about meditation and then simply did it. When we were done, I noticed the administrator had a little tear in his eye. He asked, " did you get better or something? What happened?" No, I said, you just got quieter. It was really a special experience for him. He bought one of Susan's CD's and booklets and wants to start a practice. So I scheduled another session in a few weeks. Keep looking for those opportunities. Mention what you're doing as often as possible and you'll be surprised how warmly you'll be received.

I, too, missed the call. Seems my phone, cable, computer hookup was mostly not working for the past two months. But things are exciting here, too. In doing research on meditation in educational settings, I discovered that there have been a number of studies but almost all of them use TM. TM, with it's perceived religious connections has created some problems relative to separation of church and state. So. I decided to put together some of my own pilots with one group for high school girls from a local Catholic girls school and another for the general public, including a number of teachers who want to get involved. The groups will begin in January if all goes as planned. I'm really excited to get started and see where this will lead in the educational community. I have been delighted and really surprised at the interest and support from everyone I talk to.
